How many architects are members of the AIA?
94,000 membersAIA was founded in 1857 by 13 architects. Now we’re more than 94,000 members strong. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., we have more than 200 chapters around the world. We advocate for the value of architecture and give architects the resources they need to do their best work.

What is the role of the AIA?
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) works to advance our nation’s quality of life and protect the public’s health, safety and welfare, as it has done for 160 years. Each day AIA members across the country and throughout the world create the places where people live and learn, work, and play.
Is it worth joining AIA?
It’s definitely been worth it for me. If you’re a new grad and can take advantage of the free membership deal, there’s really no reason not to join even if your local chapter isn’t as active.
What nationality are most architects?
The most common ethnicity of Architects is White (71.3%), followed by Asian (13.8%) and Hispanic or Latino (9.9%). The majority of Architects are located in NY, New York and DC, Washington.
Can you join the AIA if you are not an architect?
Individuals who do not hold a degree in architecture, but share an interest in the built environment as a professional colleague or enthusiast, are eligible for Local Allied membership. Your membership is at the local level.
