What does AIA stand for in construction?

The name The American Institute of Architects and the initials (AIA) are registered trademarks.


What is the difference between RA and AIA?

Once you’re licensed, you can officially call yourself an architect. Architects can put the initials R.A. (Registered Architect) after their names, but it’s more common to see AIA (American Institute of Architects), meaning they’re a member of the national professional association for licensed architects.

The American Institute of Architects was one of 27 founding members of the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1948 and has been an active participant in the programs, initiatives, and leadership of the UIA since that time.
