It’s important to know what your readers want. To find out, pay attention to your genres conventions. But what are genre conventions? You may know the name of the genre you’ve chosen to write in, you may have even written a story or two. Or ten.
What are genre conventions?
A genre is a category of literary composition. It’s classified according to the content, style, or form of the text. When you sit to write a book, you make several choices. These include your genre, point of view, theme, and more.
Where do they come from?
A genre convention refers to the standard set of stylistic and thematic expectations that readers have for a given type of literature. Therefore, genre conventions come from the readers. Or do they? Upon further thought, I’d say these conventions originate from authors like you. Stories have been around for a long time.
Why are genre conventions important?
Let’s say you’re standing in front of a coffee shop and a juice or smoothie cafe. Depending on who you are, you will gravitate to one shop over the other, and your expectations will be different. When you go into a coffee shop, you expect certain smells, a cozy atmosphere, and yummy treats that…may not be so healthy.
When should genre conventions be used?
All the time. The key is not knowing when you should use them, but what ones you should use. Any conventions related to settings, characterization, and writing style will be placed throughout your story. Conventions related to your narrative structure (i.e. your plot) will have a time and place within your story.

What is genre in film?
There are many aspects that define a genre. Before we dive into those, it’s important that we first get a solid understanding of the genre definition.
GENRE DEFINITION
Movie genres are stylistic categories where a particular movie can be placed based on the setting, characters, plot, mood, tone, and theme. A film’s main genre category will be based on where the majority of the content lands. A sub-genre is a smaller category that fits inside a particular genre. Often this is a mixture of two separate genres.
Aspects of movie genres
One of the more significant determining factors to a genre is setting. Setting is ultimately the time and place of a story. Setting is either outwardly articulated to us, or discretely suggested to us. It can be suggested by weather, clothing, culture, architecture, etc.
What is genre determined by?
Even with a story, plot, and setting locked in, a film needs characters to execute the experience. Characters are typically a tell-tale sign of a film’s genre — not only physical characteristics, but internal characteristics as well. A character’s desires, behavior, or personality may lend itself to a specific genre.
Genre conventions in film
A plot refers to the main events in a story composed as a connected sequence of events. This is the execution of the chain of events that happen in a story.
Genre characteristics in film
Every good film has a central topic or message within the story. This is the film’s theme. A theme is often called the backbone of a story because it is essentially what the audience will walk away with once the credits roll.
