This is not to say that either of these teams didn’t have any competition within their conference, they were just expected to prevail over any intraconference threat regardless of injuries or unforeseen circumstances. Heading into the 2021-22 season, the Lakers and Nets are giving off a similar aura.

Los Angeles Lakers

For a third straight offseason, since signing LeBron James in the summer of 2018, the Lakers were one of the most active teams in the offseason.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets were stacked in the 2020-21 season but injuries played spoiler and didn’t allow them to legitimately contend for the championship.

Los Angeles Lakers

Over the past couple of decades, the Western Conference has been the stronger and deeper conference. However, for the upcoming 2021-22 season, long-term injuries to key players on potential title contenders like Jamal Murray (Denver Nuggets), Kawhi Leonard (LA Clippers) and Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors) has shallowed the pool.

Brooklyn Nets

In the East, which seems to be a lot deeper this season, I believe the Nets have two legitimate competitors in the Miami Heat and the reigning NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks.

Takeaways from what turned into an exciting Christmas matchup

While there were plenty of stars missing from Saturday night’s matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets, the players who did take the floor put on quite a show. After falling behind by as many as 23 points during the fourth quarter, the Lakers made a furious late rally to even things up in the final minute of regulation.

1. Christmas stars

No Kevin Durant? No Anthony Davis? No Kyrie Irving? That didn’t stop Saturday’s matchup from being a star-studded affair, as Harden and James went back and forth displaying why they’re perennial All-Stars and former MVPs.

2. Rough night for Russ

One star that didn’t quite live up to his billing was Russell Westbrook. The box score will tell you he had a triple-double (13 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists), which may seem like a good game until you realize he was 4-for-20 from the field and finished as a team-worst minus-23.

3. Claxton drops the hammer

There were a ton of huge shots down the stretch of this game, but none was bigger than Nic Claxton’s and-one dunk with just over 40 seconds left to give the Nets a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

4. Brooklyn’s support system

Harden and Mills were fantastic, but the Nets couldn’t have won without huge performances from the supporting cast.

5. Lakers’ defensive struggles continue

The furious late comeback was great and all, but it doesn’t disguise the fact that the Lakers were absolutely dreadful defensively — again — for the first three quarters of the game, when they allowed 102 points to the Nets.

looks like the Nets will hang on despite the furious comeback attempt from the Lakers … big win for Brooklyn and a tough one to swallow for the Lakers

Neither the Lakers nor the Nets are at full strength

Is it the NBA Finals preview we were promised when the NBA schedule was set? Unfortunately … no. The Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets were decimated even before the league’s recent COVID-19 outbreak robbed them of several key players. Anthony Davis is injured. Kyrie Irving is working his way back onto the floor.

Lakers: Let’s not beat around the bush here: The Lakers have been a colossal disappointment thus far this season. That doesn’t mean they won’t turn things around, but they need significantly more from their supporting cast than they’ve gotten. LeBron can only do so much. That’s what’s made this recent stretch of games so interesting for the Lakers.

The Lakers are simply healthier right now. Health is relative in the COVID era, of course, but until we have a better sense of who will be on the court for the Nets, the Lakers should be considered favorites simply because LeBron James will likely play assuming his ankle is OK after the scare against Phoenix.

The Lakers and Nets Are in trouble.

  • At this point, the two preseason title favoritesare both more likely to miss the playoffs than win a championship. As a reminder, in the still-new play-in format, only six teams in each conference automatically qualify for the playoff bracket, while the next four teams in the standings play a mini-tournament for the final two seeds. And thanks to i…

The Eastern Playoff Picture Looks as Hazy as Ever.

  • The Heat enter the stretch run in a tie with the Bulls for the best record in the East, with a much more favorable schedule; accounting for opponent, location, and opponent injuries, the Bulls have the league’s hardest remaining slate, while the Heat have the sixth-easiest. Thus, Miami has a 58 percent chance to finish with the East’s no. 1 seed. But after Miami, there is no consensus aroun…

The Western Playoff Picture Is Much More settled.

  • The Heat are the only team in the East’s top 10 with even a 40 percent chance to finish in any one particular spot in the standings. But out West, the 1-through-8 order might already be set. Even with Chris Paul injured, the Suns—with a 6.5-game lead and an easier remaining schedule than the Warriors and Grizzlies have—still have a 98 percent chance to retain the West’s top seed. The W…
