Let the scout know that at the BOR he is representing the adults in the troop, his troop, and himself. It is very important that he is prepared

I have never had a scout with an attitude of entitlement when conducting a scoutmaster conference. Being aware of attitudes is important, if there is any hint of one we will be discussing it and maybe even schedule another meeting so he can think about what being an Eagle scout means and represents to him.

prouddad

Our Scoutmaster will not give my son a Scoutmaster Conference for the rank of Eagle. He thinks 13 years old is too young to me an Eagle Scout and wants to “slow him down” and “hold him up” a little. Our Committee Chair Agrees.

caddmommy

He got this far and now the SM is saying “slow down”. Why did that not happen when the SM signed off on the Eagle project, and the Advancement chair should have been clued in by all the MBs. The fire should have been contained when it got started, not after it burnt down the building.

whitewater

I personally have mixed feelings about 13 year old Eagles. I think sometimes they have been lead by the hand by a well-intending parent that does a little too much for them along the way. Often these boys are products of Troops that are merit-badge factories as well.

FScouter

Maybe at a meeting the boy could ask to speak to the Scoutmaster. Pull up a couple of chairs and have a nice chat with the Scoutmaster. Part of the conversation would include “Gee Mr. Scoutmaster, what other specific things do I need to do before I’m qualified to sit for my Eagle Board of Review”, and “Gee Mr.

Bob White

Nicely explain to the scoutmaster that it is the BSA’s responsibility to determine what it takes to be an Eagle scout and that your son has met those requirements. You would appreciate him setting aside his personal opinions and following the advancement policies of the BSA program.

FScouter

Bob’s got a good point. The SM conference took place when the SM asked “Where’s the fire” and told him to slow down. I’d ask him to point me to the BSA age requirement for the Eagle rank.

EagleInKY

I agree with the posters that the SM is in error. This is not the time to “throttle back” a boy’s advancement. If he felt he was advancing too fast, he should have attempted to handle that with the earlier ranks.

Question – if the scout is the Scoutmaster’s son, who should do the Scoutmaster conference for the Eagle rank? Also, if someome else, like a past scoutmaster is selected to run the conference, should / could the Scoutmaster attend?

FScouter

Generally speaking, the Scoutmaster should be the one to do Scoutmaster conferences. Some Scoutmasters assign this duty to assistant Scoutmasters, though I don’t see the point. In the case of a father/son relationship, it might make sense to have the boy do the conference with an assistant Scoutmaster.

evmori

Technically, it is the SM’s responsibility to do all SM conferences. However, he/she can assign this duty to a qualified ASM. When I was SM, I always looked forward to doing these conferences. However, when my own son was ready for a SM conference, I had an ASM handle the task.

packsaddle

I am an ASM without a boy still in scouts. The other leaders with boys in the troop entrust this to me. Although I don’t do it often, so far everyone is pleased with the results. Just do what is best for the boys.

packsaddle

The answer that I understand is that he CAN do the conference with his son. However, some want their sons to confront the same situation that other boys confront…a conference with someone who is not their parent. As you suggest this also would present a different appearance (I’m not sure how important this is).
