College football rankings: Big Ten overtakes SEC as college football’s top conference.

A Possible Solution

My solution is to put together a group of conferences for all sports except football.

New Big Ten and New ACC

I often consider these two conferences brothers. Most of the Big Ten and ACC teams are ranked in the Top 100 of the US News & World Report university rankings, and many are AAU members.

New Big East and Great Midwest

This realignment brings back the original “Big East” (minus Pittsburgh, which is in the ACC). I have always wanted Temple in the Big East, so I put it there to form rivalries with Villanova, Syracuse, Georgetown and Connecticut.

New SEC (South Atlantic and South Central)

The SEC has won seven consecutive FBS national championships, making it the envy of most teams outside of the SEC.

New Big 12 (Big 8 and Southwest)

The Big 12 we know today was, to a degree, a merger of two conferences, the Big Eight Conference and the Southwest Conference (SWC). The old Big Eight Conference added Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Baylor to form the Big 12. The four SWC rivals left behind joined other conferences.

New Pac-10, MWC, and PCAA

Larry Scott (Pacific 12 commissioner) is not going to be happy, but I had to undo the addition of Colorado and Utah because of my 10-team-per-conference cap.

New “Mid-Majors”

Duquesne, Fordham, George Washington, LaSalle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, St. Joseph’s, Virginia Commonwealth

List of College Teams in FBS Conferences

Here are the teams within each of these conferences. You’ll notice that several conferences have 2 divisions within them and that most conferences are now up to 12 teams in them (even though their name may not reflect the more recent change):

East Carolina
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
Middle Tennessee
Old Dominion
Western Kentucky

Independent teams

You’ll notice that for each of the conferences, they generally follow some type of geographical location where the teams are relatively close to each other or make sense based on the conference name.

2017: Coastal Carolina

It’s hard to believe the Chanticleers have only fielded a squad since 2003 and are now poised to join the Sun Belt.

2018: Campbell

The squad with quite possibly the best logo in all of FCS is moving from the Pioneer League to the Big South next year. Pretty impressive for a school that went without football from 1951 to 2007 before reinstating it in 2008.

2018: New Mexico State

The Aggies were the only other team to be homeless after the WAC dissolved and followed the same path as Idaho. The key difference in 2018 is NMSU will play as an FBS Independent, similar to UMass.

2018: Liberty

You may know more about Liberty football than you think. Does Turner Gill ring a bell?

2018-2019: North Alabama

The Lions will be packing their bags and moving twice over the next few years.
