How many cameras are needed to film a conference?

When filming an event in full, you want the most amount of coverage possible, but the camera positions will ultimately depend on what is available to you. At least two camera positions would be necessary to film a conference event, but if possible, three or four cameras positions would be ideal. Typically in an auditorium, the audience is seated on either side of a walkway. It is often a good place to set up there but set up farther back and higher up so that you are not interfering but are still getting a general overview of the auditorium and the panel. It is also advisable to have a camera set up on either side because this positioning makes it possible to capture the speakers on both sides of the auditorium from complementary angles. If you still have a camera and an operator available, you can choose to add a more stylistic position. For example, you could place someone at the front shooting extreme close ups from a lower angle.

Why is it important to have more than enough batteries and cards with you during filming?

It’s important to ensure that you have more than enough batteries and cards with you during filming because you do not know the exact lengths of the speakers’ talks. They might be allotted a specific time constraint, but it is possible that they might go over. You want to be able to adapt to your circumstances and by having extra batteries and cards, you will be prepared to do so.

1. Location and Surroundings For Conference Videos

The location is one of the most important thing to think about when filming a conference video, because this will give the all important ‘first impression’ of the conference. When filming speakers the background should be non-descript but still attractive and professional.

2. Multi Camera Set Ups For Conference Videos

Typically you want a minimum of a two camera set-up for conferences. This allows you to capture speakers from more than one angle and alternate to audience reactions.

3. Capturing Speakers Content

Speaker’s multimedia presentations can present challenges to film. Often projections do not show up well when being recorded on camera. This may leave you with footage that is shaky or cannot be viewed. To avoid this issue contact the speakers and ask for a copy of the presentation.

1. Bring extra batteries, memory cards, your cables, and chargers

As simple as this may seem, I know lots of people who get half way through the day and find themselves begging-borrowing for extra batteries, especially before a party. So bring at least one set of extras.

2. Get out of auto mode

One of the best pieces of advice I got about using my point-n-shoot was to get out of auto mode and into P or program mode. Why? Because you have more control. You can adjust the flash (on, off, sometimes even intensity), white balance, ISO, even sometimes the aperture and shutter speed.

4. Pay attention to the background

Trees and light posts sprouting out of people’s heads are mistakes you don’t need to make. Before you click, just take a quick look at the background. Is there something strange coming from the person? Something that might be embarrassing or distracting? Yeah, stop and recompose.

5. Try not to use the flash

Taking pics at a conference isn’t easy. Most of the time the lighting sucks and most folks just turn on the flash to make the shot come out. That’s not always the best idea. A flash can take away the texture and depth of your pic, but turning it off won’t that make my pics be blurry and dark? Maybe.

6. Pay attention to the lighting

Obviously this is tied to #5, while you’re trying not to use the flash don’t forget to pay attention to the lighting around you. Is there a lot of sun coming in from a window behind the person? Is the light bright in one area and dark in another? All of these things make for tough shots, but what you should do is try to make the best of it.

7. Set the white balance

Another benefit of being in P mode is being able to set the white balance on your pictures. Frankly, I leave mine on auto most of the time, but edit when I bring my files in as RAW images, but … if you’re paying attention to the lighting setting the WB to sun or flash or florescent will make the pictures look a heck of a lot better.

8. More is better

I’m often asked “wow how did you get that shot!?!”. I have a simple answer: luck and taking lots of shots. Really. One of the best pieces of advice I was given when I got a DSLR was to shoot at least three pictures per shot. Why? Because people blink, glance away, etc.
