Elon College was founded by the Christian Connection, which later became a part of the United Church of Christ. The charter for Elon College was issued by the North Carolina legislature in 1889. William S. Long was the first president, and the original student body consisted of 76 students.   • Former conference rivals, Elon and Wofford will meet in a non-conference game for the second consecutive season. Wofford holds a 28-11 lead in the all-time series, including a 24-22 victory in the season opener in 2021. In fact, the Terriers have won the past six head-to-head contests since the Phoenix picked up a 34-6 win in 2009. Saturday, Sept. 17 vs. Gardner-Webb

  • Another former conference rival, Elon leads the all-time series 21-11. Gardner-Webb earned a non-conference victory in the 2020 (spring 2021) season, beating a ranked Elon team 42-20.
