Which conference has the best chance of bringing two teams into the playoffs?
The ACC, more than any other Power 5 conference, has the best chance of bringing two teams into the four-team field. It’s impossible to forget the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 0-6 bowl record. Yes, Notre Dame’s temporary loyalty brought two teams into the playoff, but all were eliminated in a decisive fashion. With such a large distance between the top few teams in the league and the rest of the field, no one gained more from conference-heavy scheduling in terms of national perception. During bowl season, this becomes much more apparent. Miami is ranked 10th, while North Carolina is ranked 17th. With an 8-3 record, NC State could be the best-unranked team in the nation, while Boston College, Virginia, and Wake Forest are all above .500.
Is the Pac-12 in the playoffs?
While the Pac-12 is still mathematically ineligible for the playoffs, the fact that only three of its teams are ranked in the top 25 in the new playoff rankings does not bode well for West Coast football. Despite the addition of the No. 22 Washington Huskies to the Pac-12, the No. 20 USC Trojans had a game cancelled, and the Oregon Ducks lost, dropping to No. 23 overall. Its mediocrity was secured when 5-0 USC lost in the conference championship game to the same Oregon team, ensuring that the playoff committee will have no unbeaten Pac-12 team to consider. With sophomore standout Kedon Slovis at quarterback and a strong defence led by All-American safety Talanoa Hufanga, the Trojans might as well have made a national splash in a complete season’s worth of games.

Methods to Solve the Conference Ranking Debate
While there are an infinite number of wrong ways to solve this problem, there are thousands of, arguably, correct ways to solve it. I am focusing on two methods. Firstly, I will take a simple average of all the ratings (both FBS and FCS in every conference. There are a few reasons why I think this is the best approach.
Ranking the Top College Football Conferences
Now, we put the two methods to the test. Below are the results from the 2021-2022 college football season.
There were a few surprises here. First, the Big 12 beat out the SEC in both methods. Second, the two methods had almost identical results except with the Pac-12 and Mountain West Conference swapping places from one method to the other.
Some Discussion and Other Analysis
First and foremost, this is only one year’s worth of data. I plan on revisiting this post with more cumulative data in the following few years. I could have used past ratings, but until this year, my FBS and FCS ratings were independent and couldn’t be compared to each other.
Which college football conferences have the best academic rankings?
Stanford is the highest-ranked FBS school in the latest U.S. News rankings.
Research 1 universities
Another way to measure academic status is by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. There are 131 schools in the country with Research 1 (R1) status.
10. Mid-American Conference
Had this been following the 2016 season when Western Michigan rowed the boat to a 13-0 regular season, the MAC might rank higher. But as it is, the conference has a bit to prove. Not only did the MAC go 1-4 during the 2017 bowl season, but its champion, Toledo, was smacked 34-0 by Appalachian State in the Dollar General Bowl.
9. Sun Belt
I wouldn’t say that the Sun Belt is an overwhelming league in terms of its talent, but it is an interesting one. Appalachian State is always good under Scott Satterfield, who’s led the Mountaineers to a 37-14 record since joining the Sun Belt (and the FBS) in 2014.
No. 8 Conference USA
This conference, perhaps more than any, received a jolt of interest over the last few years in large part due to the coaches who have landed there.
No. 7 Mountain West
Less attention is given this league than the AAC or Conference USA, but its top-end teams are capable of playing with anyone. Boise State can claim 10 double-digit win seasons over the last 12 years, including a trio of Fiesta Bowl victories.
No. 6 AAC
The only other conference that can claim a 2017 “national champion,” the AAC is the clear sixth-best league in the country. Honestly, depending on the year, you could make a strong argument the AAC is just as good as the worst Power Five league. Seriously, look at the conference’s recent success.
No. 5 Pac-12
We’re not leaning too heavily into the 2017 bowl results here, but the Pac-12’s 1-8 record is telling. Out of the College Football Playoff discussion by October, the Pac-12 didn’t show itself to be much better come postseason play.
No. 4 Big 12
A year ago at this time, the Big 12 was a distant fifth among the Power Five. Now, you could make a strong argument the league is encroaching on the top 3. The Big 12 can claim all of these things in 2017: A playoff spot, a Heisman Trophy and the largest percentage of bowl teams.
Ohio State has settled into an annual habit of conference dominance and national title contention. This season should be no different, although you should watch out for Michigan, which just completed a highly successful recruiting cycle, and Penn State, which is looking to build on the …
When perennial playoff participant Clemson is your standard-bearer, you’re in pretty good shape. The Tigers showed some unexpected vulnerability in a disjointed 2020 campaign, but they continue to recruit at a high level and are clearly the Alabama of the ACC. North Carolina is thriving under Mack Brown and may produce the 2021 Heisman winner in heralded quarterback …
The Big 12 has welcomed the rise of Iowa State to national prominence under Matt Campbell. The Cyclones and Oklahoma Sooners could stage an epic battle for a conference title and playoff berth this season, and both teams boast legitimate Heisman candidates (OU QB Spencer Rattler and ISU RB Breece Hall). The league’s perennial wild card is Texas, which will be under new man…
USC has fallen on relative hard times in the last several seasons due to coaching instability and general Left Coast apathy, but there are signs of life in Troy, as Kedon Slovis is among this season’s Heisman frontrunners. Up north, the Oregon Ducks are as intriguing as ever, and Jimmy Lake got off to a promising start at Washington. A NCAA investigation has clouded Arizona Stat…
The AAC is riding the strength of league frontrunner Cincinnati, which is a legitimate playoff threat in 2021. The Bearcats appear to be in a league of their own in the context of their conference counterparts, though. Tulsa had a shockingly good 2020 but is poised to take a step back. SMU and Tulane will be dangerous again, and UCF amped up the league’s intrigue factor by hiring Gu…
San Jose State shocked the college football world by going unbeaten in MW play. The Spartans will look to defy the odds again, but as usual, Boise State will have a say in who wins this league. Led by a high-powered offense, Nevada is Athlon’s pick to win the West Division. Watch out for San Diego State, which is recruiting well under Brady Hoke. Also, look for Fresno State to improv…
SBC fans had better enjoy Louisiana’s Billy Napier and Coastal Carolina’s Jamey Chadwell while they can because their level of G5 success inevitably leads to coach-poaching. For now, they’re the flagship programs of a highly respectable and fast-rising conference. Appalachian State will be strong again, and Georgia State is intriguing behind a high-powered offense. Can Arkansas St…
Bill Clark continues to work wonders in Birmingham; his UAB Blazers are 34–16 since the school resurrected its football program in 2017 following a two-year hiatus. UTSA has the necessary pieces to push UAB in the West, especially with All-American Sincere McCormick returning at running back. Marshall is a slight favorite in the East under new coach Charles Huff. Florida Atla…
It’s business as usual in the MAC, where the in-conference competition will be stout but a top 25 team is probably a stretch. Buffalo and Ball State were the division kingpins last season, and both should contend again, but watch out for Toledo, which has outrecruited its conference brethren lately. While the Bulls bring back several key cogs from last year’s team, the departure of coach …
Methods to Solve The Conference Ranking Debate
Urban Meyer, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Joel Klatt and the rest of the crew unanimously selected the Southeastern Conference as the best conference in college football. And when looking at the numbers, it’s easy to see why the SEC reigns supreme. When it comes to winning, the other four Power 5 conferences combined don’t match what the SEC has been…
