The ACC, more than any other Power 5 conference, has the best chance of bringing two teams into the four-team field. It’s impossible to forget the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 0-6 bowl record. Yes, Notre Dame’s temporary loyalty brought two teams into the playoff, but all were eliminated in a decisive fashion. With such a large distance between the top few teams in the league and the rest of the field, no one gained more from conference-heavy scheduling in terms of national perception. During bowl season, this becomes much more apparent. Miami is ranked 10th, while North Carolina is ranked 17th. With an 8-3 record, NC State could be the best-unranked team in the nation, while Boston College, Virginia, and Wake Forest are all above .500.

Is the Pac-12 in the playoffs?

While the Pac-12 is still mathematically ineligible for the playoffs, the fact that only three of its teams are ranked in the top 25 in the new playoff rankings does not bode well for West Coast football. Its mediocrity was secured when 5-0 USC lost in the conference championship game to the same Oregon team, ensuring that the playoff committee will have no unbeaten Pac-12 team to consider. With sophomore standout Kedon Slovis at quarterback and a strong defence led by All-American safety Talanoa Hufanga, the Trojans might as well have made a national splash in a complete season’s worth of games.

Methods to Solve the Conference Ranking Debate

While there are an infinite number of wrong ways to solve this problem, there are thousands of, arguably, correct ways to solve it. I am focusing on two methods. Firstly, I will take a simple average of all the ratings (both FBS and FCS in every conference. There are a few reasons why I think this is the best approach.

Ranking the Top College Football Conferences

Now, we put the two methods to the test. Below are the results from the 2021-2022 college football season.
There were a few surprises here. First, the Big 12 beat out the SEC in both methods. Second, the two methods had almost identical results except with the Pac-12 and Mountain West Conference swapping places from one method to the other.

Some Discussion and Other Analysis

First and foremost, this is only one year’s worth of data. I plan on revisiting this post with more cumulative data in the following few years. I could have used past ratings, but until this year, my FBS and FCS ratings were independent and couldn’t be compared to each other.

Which college football conferences have the best academic rankings?

Stanford is the highest-ranked FBS school in the latest U.S. News rankings.

Research 1 universities

Another way to measure academic status is by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. There are 131 schools in the country with Research 1 (R1) status.

10. Mid-American Conference

Had this been following the 2016 season when Western Michigan rowed the boat to a 13-0 regular season, the MAC might rank higher. But as it is, the conference has a bit to prove. Not only did the MAC go 1-4 during the 2017 bowl season, but its champion, Toledo, was smacked 34-0 by Appalachian State in the Dollar General Bowl.

9. Sun Belt

I wouldn’t say that the Sun Belt is an overwhelming league in terms of its talent, but it is an interesting one. Appalachian State is always good under Scott Satterfield, who’s led the Mountaineers to a 37-14 record since joining the Sun Belt (and the FBS) in 2014.

No. 8 Conference USA

This conference, perhaps more than any, received a jolt of interest over the last few years in large part due to the coaches who have landed there.

No. 7 Mountain West

Less attention is given this league than the AAC or Conference USA, but its top-end teams are capable of playing with anyone. Boise State can claim 10 double-digit win seasons over the last 12 years, including a trio of Fiesta Bowl victories.

No. 6 AAC

The only other conference that can claim a 2017 “national champion,” the AAC is the clear sixth-best league in the country. Honestly, depending on the year, you could make a strong argument the AAC is just as good as the worst Power Five league. Seriously, look at the conference’s recent success.

No. 5 Pac-12

We’re not leaning too heavily into the 2017 bowl results here, but the Pac-12’s 1-8 record is telling. Out of the College Football Playoff discussion by October, the Pac-12 didn’t show itself to be much better come postseason play.

No. 4 Big 12

A year ago at this time, the Big 12 was a distant fifth among the Power Five. Now, you could make a strong argument the league is encroaching on the top 3. The Big 12 can claim all of these things in 2017: A playoff spot, a Heisman Trophy and the largest percentage of bowl teams.
