2. Big East

The league got off to a blazing start even though its Final Four contender Villanova lost two marquee games at UCLA and to Purdue at the Mohegan Sun. UConn, Seton Hall, Xavier, Marquette and Providence have all had significant wins that will have shelf-life for tournament resumes. Getting six out of 11 teams in the field is a good bet.

3. Big Ten

Purdue is the class of the league and may enter the new year as the favorite to win the national title. The league struggled for a few weeks but found its footing in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Illinois, which should be the second-best team, hasn’t had one game with all of its players yet even with Kofi Cockburn now dominating.

8. American

Houston is the team to beat. Memphis needs to rectify its point guard and defensive issues that arose against Iowa State and again against Georgia and Wichita State has a player of the year candidate again Tyson Etienne. But the team that could be the biggest surprise is Cincinnati.

10. Mountain West

Colorado State is the team to beat followed by San Diego State. Both could be heading for bids. The two teams to look out for are Wyoming and Utah State. This league is likely to have at least one team in the First Four.

10. Atlantic 10

As its top teams gradually headed out the door, the Atlantic 10 has dropped off a bit in recent years. It wasn’t so long ago that the league placed six teams in the NCAA Tournament back in 2014.

9. Mountain West

Not a huge gap between the Atlantic 10 and the Mountain West, and in some years the A10 gets the better of this matchup. This time around, the Mountain West gets a slight edge because it features three fairly clear contenders to earn NCAA Tournament at-large bids whereas the A10 has some catching up to do in that area.

8. American Athletic Conference

Cincinnati’s decline since former coach Mick Cronin left for UCLA has eaten into the AAC’s level of success on the national stage. The Bearcats have one of college basketball’s proudest programs historically speaking but have not put a great product on the court the last three seasons.

7. West Coast Conference

Three months from Selection Sunday, it appears that the WCC should get four teams into the 2022 NCAA Tournament — or even five if a massive underdog were to win the conference tournament. Gonzaga, obviously, is a lock and will likely end up with a No. 1 seed. BYU, San Francisco and Saint Mary’s are also in great shape right now.

4. Big East

This league will provide one of the most exciting regular-season races heading into the early spring. Villanova, Xavier, UConn, Seton Hall, Providence and Creighton all can claim some sort of realistic hope of winning the conference, and all are on pace to make the NCAA Tournament.

The power conferences certainly hold more quality teams than lesser conferences, but the number is beginning to even out.

7. Atlantic 10

Ever since its magical March Madness run with Gordon Hayward, Butler has been a team to look out for, and now its conference is catching up.
